Kim Rhode - contd.. With her dramatic gold-medal-winning performance at the Athens Olympic Games, Kim Rhode has become the most decorated female Olympian in the history of USA Shooting. In 1996 she won the gold medal at the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta and four years later she won the bronze medal at the Sydney Games. In addition, Rhode has won seven gold medals in World Cup competitions. Rhode also captured the gold medal at both the 1999 and 2003 Pan American Games.
This March, Kim won the World Cup in Santo Domingo and in the process set a new world record with her score. Recently, she won the U.S. National Championship and she has her sites set on her first selection match in August of this year for the honor of again representing the United States.
At the young age of 27, Kim Rhode has won just about every award and honor that you can earn in the sport of shooting and in the outdoors industries. She has been named 2002, 2003 & 2004 USA Shooting "FEMALE SHOOTER OF THE YEAR" and "FEMALE SHOTGUN SHOOTER OF THE YEAR". In addition, Kim has received the United States Olympic Committee's "SHOOTER OF THE YEAR" award and CHEVY TRUCKS' "SHOOTER OF THE YEAR" awards.
After her 1996 Olympic performance, Kim was named one of the "TOP TEN SPORTS PHENOMS OF 1996" by TIME Magazine. She was one of two Olympians honored (with gymnast Kerri Strug) and was joined by golf sensation Tiger Woods on the select TIME list. Kim is also a two-time recipient of the prestigious VICTOR AWARD.
In addition, Kim has received tremendous coverage by the national and outdoors media that has included full page salutes in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and USA Today. Kim is a featured spokesperson and host for The Outdoor Channel and also represents Nike, Perazzi, Marksman-Beeman, Winchester, She Safari, Kids and Clays, Randolph Engineering, MyHuntingRoom.com and the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s annual “Scholastic Clay Target Championships.”
Rhode has served as the featured national spokesperson for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's national television and radio public service campaigns that promoted important outdoors safety and conservation messages. She has appeared at scores of events that have assisted vital local, regional and national organizations in the outdoors industries and in behalf of numerous charities. Kim’s accomplishments have received millions of impressions in print and electronic media but her favorite appearance was “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in 1996 right before her first Olympic Games. “I was only 16 at the time and all of my friends stayed up just to watch me. After I won my gold medal, Jay Leno sent me a dozen roses to celebrate!”
She attends California State University at Pomona and has successfully balanced a demanding schedule that includes her collegiate classes and study as well as her travel to international competitions, practice time and personal appearances on behalf of her sponsors and her sport. When Kim does have some precious free time on her hands, she enjoys restoring classic vehicles and working on her Craftsman home. She has a collection of ten automobiles and trucks that includes a classic red Cobra that she and her father built from the kit! In addition, she always finds time for important charities both in her community and in the outdoor world as well.
